Nick Watney won the World Golf Championship, a victory well deserved. Watney showed signals of his hunger for this trophy since 6 weeks ago. With sixty six players from around all corners of the world, twenty two were Americans, the variety and the skills of the competitors were too mixed. There was Nick Watney who was paired with his compatriot Matt Kuchar; they were the penultimate duo to play. The tournament easily could have been won by an European or even an Asian guy. But that wouldn't be something new. The world of golf needed something new, something that make the World Golf Championship felt like a special tournament and not like just one more of the few. Watney victory was refreshing.
Watney had style, a good flowing swing and enough skill to win. During weeks Watney has finished in the top ten lists; but the point to all that is to win, and he didn't wait anymore. In the short form, Watney started with a couple of birdies and end of the front nine to catch up with Dustin Johnson. Later took an one-shot lead with another two birdies on the par-5 10th and 12th holes. The road to the last hole and victory was rough; but luckily for Watney, Johnson wasn't on his best day either falling one shot behind at the 16th hole. At that moment, the opportunity opened for Watney who got in the 18th tee; with water at the left and bailing outs with palms at the right, not a very comfortable view for players aiming to the green. Watney made his birdie; putting him at 16-under 272 pushing Johnson to force a playoff hole out. Johnson shot land softly near 8 feet away; definitely not his day; he missed the putt and shot 71. Victory was claimed.
Apparently, a few jokes made their run during the day; mostly between Watney and his caddie Chad Reynolds. The caddie can’t cut his hair due to a bet they made in Torrey Pines. At the first day of tournament Reynolds mentioned he needed a haircut, so Watney suggested that there will be no haircut until they finished out of the top ten. Since then, Watney has been inside the top ten during these last five tournaments and there is plenty of time and skill to keep him in that position. - "his hair is looking a little bit nasty." quoted the smiling champion Watney. With this victory at Doral, he blinked from the position 146th to 2nd on tour. Also this was his third career win, a victory he called – "The biggest day of his golfing career".
