British Open 2011, Just for the Hardened?

Written by MK

British Open 2011

The British Open appears to be one of the hardest tournaments on this 2011 season, especially for the noobs. The weather is a key factor in the difficult of this scenario, and is here where the experience tests the players, making this tournament not only a matter of skill but also of knowledge.

This is where we see the things that happen when youth just turns to be a second plane factor and don't means pretty much, and the ages of experience recover their golden shine. We have seen old school players like Miguel Angel Jimenez, Thomas Bjorn and Mark Calcaveccia taking the leads, while the new a freshly players like Tom Lewis and Rory Mcllroy are having some troubles to deal with Royal St.George's field.

Eight years ago, Thomas Bjorn was there, at the Kent coast when he almost wins the Open. It was Ben Curtis the one who claimed the trophy at that time on 2003. But for Bjorn, this is the place to be, this time he is not only playing the Open, he is also at the lead. He made seven birdies, but one of them was special, one that came at the hole that ruined the hopes to win in 2003, the cursed 16th hole. With the nightmare hole already defeated, things move smoothly. However things could get dangerous for Bjorn redemption, due to the young Tom Lewis.

Fat Cigar in mouth and Rioja in hand, the Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez is one of those old dogs that knows how to move on Royal ST.George's field, 28 years of experience on the European tour ant 4 Ryder Cups can't be defeated so easily by the British land and weather. Jimenez could be considered one of the most experienced and finest players, he may not have won a mayor tournament, but he is no stranger at the Slams. His best finish was at 2001, where he reached the third at the top-10 place at the Lytham tournament. So we may consider that Jimenez could give us a surprise this time.

From the side of the youngsters, Rory Mcllroy is one of the expected players to win the British Open, however, the starting performance of Mcllroy wasn't as good as many fans were waiting. Possibly the windy conditions are not favorable for the Irish youngster high balls hits. The opponents he is facing are strong and many are experienced old-timers. Mcllroy showed us he can win a major event like he did in the US Open, but that doesn't mean he will be winning all of them. He may be the next Tiger Woods, or at least that is what the people are expecting, but it will take some time to get in that kind of level.

We also have Tom Lewis, who didn't have troubles at the start, moved forward in a fast paced rhythm. The 20 years old amateur shared the lead at the board with the veteran Thomas Bjorn after an amazing shot a 5-under par 65 in the 18th hole from the star of a long day. Lewis had performed with supreme form on the links this summer, winning at the ST.Andrewa Links Trophy and qualifying for the Open at Rye. The British lad did a great job, maybe inspired by his Father golfer hero Tom Watson, who accompanied the boy during the event starting day and was the source of his name.

There is a lot more of golf ahead for us to see, should the experience prevail over the youth precocity? Or the luck will smile early to the future "champions" to give space to the next wave of professional golfers?
